Skin Care Basics

May 27, 2019

The number one thing to keep your skin looking young and healthy is never go to bed with a dirty face. Going to bed with your makeup on can age your skin up to seven times faster. For years, I didn’t take the best care of my skin and I reaped the casualties from it.

If you’re not sure where to start, don’t be overwhelmed. Here are my top tips to get started on a skincare regimen.

  1. Always take your makeup off. I personally use Fooops Makeup remover because it’s specifically designed to take off SeneGence longlasting makeup. I’ve also used drugstore brands before and found some I liked. I used to use Burt’s Bees makeup removing wipes. I’ve also used Neutrogena and Almay. It’s really important to take your makeup off before washing your face because if you don’t, you’re just rubbing dirty old makeup all over your face.
  2. Wash your face. This may sound very obvious to some of you, but for a long time I thought just taking my makeup off was enough – wrong! Yes, you are removing most of the makeup, but just think of all the dirt, grime, oil, environmental factors, etc. that have piled up on your skin all day. Plus, your treatments and moisturizers can’t actually get to your skin if it’s not clean. It’s kind of like if a kid scrapes falls and scrapes their knee. You don’t go putting antibiotic cream on on the cut before you wash the dirt off.
  3. Treat problem areas. For me, it’s acne treatment and beginning signs of aging. So I use Spot-On Acne treatment and Anti-Wrinkle treatment. Maybe your’s is dark circles or age spots. Whatever it is, there’s a treatment for it, I guarantee it.
  4. Moisturize! For soooo long, I thought that since I had oily skin, I didn’t need to moisturize – wrong! Your skin has to have moisture. This is one of the main reasons skin starts showing age. Think of a raisin versus a grape. Your skin cells are very similar to this analogy. Not only does your face need hydration, so does the delicate area around your eyes. I recommend finishing with a good eye creme.
  5. Use a skincare system specific to your skin needs. I have oily, acne-prone skin. So I use the normal-oily and oily-acne skincare system. I use both kinds of cleanser and then oily-acne moisturizer. With my oily skin, I wouldn’t use a skincare system for dry skin because it would add too much moisture to my skin, possibly increasing my proneness to acne. Vice versa for Dry skin, you’re not going to use a skincare system designed for oily skin, you won’t be getting the right amount of hydration.

I hope these tips take some of the mystery out of skincare for you. Don’t let all of the possibilities overwhelm you. If you’re not sure where to start, I would love to help you.
